We had a great gig at the Vortex on Monday with Stoop Quintet and got some clips of some of the tunes, too. Here's an atmospheric piece of Jon Brigg's entitled Fable. More clips on the Stoop Quintet page.

The next gig with this group is on Wednesday 5th February at the University of York.

We're then in York on February 5th, shortly followed by an appearance at Coastival in Scarborough on February 15th.

My new quintet Homespun have also recently confirmed two gigs for the new year, the first of which is at the Camden Jazz Jam at the Forge. For more details on any of these, see the dates section...

1/11/13 - Ray's Jazz/Platform 33
Looking forward to a couple of gigs next week with my octet and a new group. The first of these, on Thursday 7th at Ray's Jazz (Foyles), is with Timecraft and will be the last outing from this band for a while. It's an early gig kicking off at 6pm, but most importantly it's free, so come and here the band if you have chance!

The next night will be the first outing for a new quintet featuring Matthew Herd and Sam Miles (saxes), Jez Franks (guitar), Sandy Suchodolski (bass). We'll be playing some original tunes and compositions by Huw Warren, Hermeto Pascoal and Django Bates as part of Platform33's gig at Limewharf, Hackney.

Dave Smyth Dave Smyth is a London-based drummer and composer.

Hailing from the Midlands, Dave cut his teeth touring the UK with a successful local rock band before relocating to study music at the University of York. Whilst completing this degree Dave discovered his interest in contemporary British jazz. He was fortunate enough to study under John Taylor, Julian Argüelles and Martin France, before gaining a place on the MA Jazz course at the Royal Academy of Music where he recently graduated with Distinction.

As a leader and sideman he has performed at venues and festivals including the 606 Club, The Vortex, Kings Place, The Forge (Camden), Pizza Express (Dean Street), Manchester Jazz Festival and Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, as well as recordings and live broadcasts for BBC Radio 2 and 3.

His octet, Timecraft, featured saxophonist Iain Ballamy for their debut performance and the group toured the UK during the summer of 2013.

Dave became the drum kit tutor at the University of York in 2010 and has been an assistant tutor on Falmouth-Yamaha Jazz Summer School since 2012.

Matthew Herd - alto/sop saxes
Sam Miles - tenor/sop saxes

Sandy Suchodolski - bass
Dave Smyth - drums
Stoop Quintet Defiant of categorisation and yet extremely accessible, Jon Brigg's Stoop Quintet combines elements of jazz, folk and contemporary as if heard 'in a dream', performed by some of the most unique young musicians in the UK.

Sometimes the music is unpredictable, sometimes it's tender... sometimes mysterious. Sometimes it has a fat groove and a heavy stoop.

Alex Munk - guitar
James Mainwaring - saxes
Dave Smyth - drums
Mick Bardon - bass
Jon Brigg - piano/compositions
